Guide · work stages
Refurbishing your pharmacy.
Planning for continuity.
Phased work may reduce closure time, but continued operation depends on space, technical services, safety and interference between activities. Assess feasibility before setting the programme; temporary closure may be needed for some works.
Check whether operation can continue
Review entrances, escape routes, work areas, services, dust, noise, material movement and possible separation of areas. If works conflict with safety, hygiene or essential functions, assess partial suspension or planned closure. Technical and regulatory requirements need review by the appropriate professionals in the project country.
Create functionally independent stages
Dividing the plan into equal areas is not enough. Each stage must preserve essential functions, connections and suitable space for staff and customers. Consider the counter, back office, storage, services and circulation together, checking that temporary arrangements are suitable for use.
Manufacture ahead and sequence installation
Developing furniture and components and checking samples and dimensions before arrival on site helps reduce corrections during installation. Coordinate delivery and installation with building works and services. Preparation depends on accurate measurements, approved choices and site readiness.
Make changes clear to customers and staff
Temporary signs, clear information and an orderly work area help people navigate the transition. Explain which areas and services remain available and any changes to access. Review each stage before moving to the next to maintain clarity and organisation.
Consider the programme and budget together
Phased delivery may reduce disruption but requires coordination of handling, installation and temporary areas. Compare alternatives against the works required, feasibility and investment, including planned stoppages where necessary. Review refurbishment cost items and our pharmacy refurbishment approach.

Frequently asked questions
First answers.
To shape your project.
Can every pharmacy be refurbished without closing?
No. It depends on the works, services, floor area, access, safety and hygiene conditions. Defined closure periods may be more suitable for some stages.
Which works may suit phased refurbishment?
Limited changes to furniture, displays, lighting and visual identity can be assessed by area. Major changes to services or layout require a broader assessment.
How can time on site be reduced?
Through accurate surveys, working drawings, approved choices, advance manufacture and preparation, followed by installation coordinated with the works and technical services. Timing is determined for each project.
